We work to protect the Edwards Aquifer, its springs and contributing
streams, and the natural and cultural heritage of the Hill Country region
​and its watersheds, with special emphasis on Barton Springs.

Victories

  • Led the effort to pass the Save Our Springs Initiative Ordinance that enhanced water quality standards for development within the Barton Springs Zone of the Edwards Aquifer
  • Helped secure over $260 million in voter-approved funds for conservation lands to protect the Edwards Aquifer and Barton Springs
  • Petitioned and won legal actions to require endangered species listings for the Barton Springs, Austin Blind, and Jollyville Plateau salamanders
  • Fought to keep major highway expansions and pipelines out of the Hill Country and away from environmentally sensitive watersheds
  • Educated thousands of students and the general public on the management and stewardship of our region’s water resources and aquatic ecosystems through the Barton Springs University Program

Education and Outreach

Austin’s rapid growth challenges us to educate newcomers and students on the importance of and threats to Barton Springs and the Edwards Aquifer.  SOS is increasing its Education and Outreach efforts with the year round Barton Springs University Program.

Advocacy

SOS gives a voice to the environment by advocating for policies and investments that protect the water, wildlife, and open spaces of the Texas Hill Country. We partner with neighborhoods, landowners, local governments, and other nonprofit organizations to oppose the worst threats and support sustainable alternatives.
