Quarrying the limestone of the Edwards Aquifer can have very harmful effects for water and air quality as well as negative impacts to rural regions.
Digging rock that is made of karst limestone in the Recharge Zone exposes the aquifer to contaminants from quarrying, such as silt and sediment and equipment drippings, like motor oil and stored fuel.
Crushing the rock emits particulates into the air.
Citizens in Hays County have been fighting a rock quarry and crusher outside of Buda. Citizens in Medina County have been opposing a proposed quarry and accompanying rail road.
