On Monday January 9th, SOS Alliance and the Center for Biological Diversity filed an updated Notice of Intent to Sue letter stating our intent to bring legal action if the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service (FWS) fails to act promptly to list the Jollyville Plateau salamander as an endangered species.
While FWS is moving to propose a listing rule this year, the species needs immediate legal protection. The current drought has greatly reduced storage in the small portion of the northern Edwards Aquifer that is essential for the salamander’s survival. The City of Austin’s move to begin construction of a 6.5 mile tunnel through and beneath the best salamander spring habitat in the upper Bull Creek watershed also poses an immediate threat to the survival of the species.
