Environment Texas, Statesman highlight occasional bacteria problems at Barton Springs, Hamilton Pool

This weekend the Austin American-Statesman reported HERE on a recent report by Environment Texas on the occurrence of elevated bacteria levels found in some favorite swimming holes, including Barton Springs and Hamilton Pool.   The Environment Texas report HERE  points out that bacteria levels are not adequately monitored, and when monitored, not timely reported so that people can make informed judgments before swimming.

Runoff following large rain events (like the one last night) will deliver spikes in harmful bacteria and viruses in all lakes, rivers, and streams.  Some of these can cause ear, eye, sinus, and other infections as well as digestive disorders.  It is best to avoid swimming for several days following significant rain events.  A good rule of thumb is to wait until the water is clear.

If it hasn’t rained recently, bacteria levels at Barton Springs will be extremely low – a small fraction of safe swimming standards.  As recommended by the Environment Texas report, we need more timely and consistent reporting of bacteria counts at Barton Springs, Bull Creek Park, Hamilton Pool and other favorite swimming holes so that visitors may make informed judgments on the risks of swimming during the days following rain events.

We appreciate Environment Texas for their excellent work and we encourage SOS Alliance supporters to support Environment Texas as well.
